Program Audience: Teachers

This program will be a 15 hour professional development workshop that will build on a teacher’s knowledge of primates, research techniques, conservation issues and Jane Goodall’s 40 year study on the chimpanzee communities in Gombe Stream National Park.

Program Goals:

1. To educate teachers about the natural history of primates.
   
2. To educate about the history of research techniques.
   
3. To develop awareness of conservation issues locally and globally.
   
4. To build awareness of Jane Goodall, her research, image and message.
   
5. To address State and National standards.
   

1. View movie “Jane Goodall’s Wild Chimpanzee’s”.
   
2. Lecture from primate research at Carnegie Museum of Natural History on who primates are, history of primates, where primates are found.
   
3. Previous Primate Research – Jane Goodall, Leakeys, etc.
   
4. Current Primate Research – who does it, where is it being done, what is being studied? Bring in Elizabeth or connect via distance learning.
   
5. Visit to local zoo to observe primates.
   
6. Web cam to Kansas City Zoo to see chimpanzees and talk with primate keeper.
   
7. Conservation Issues locals and global: Roots & Shoots, Jane Goodall Institute, Zoo, local environmental groups.
