Program Audience(s):
School groups k- 12 and post- secondary.
Program Overview(s):
Focus of the school programs will meet state and national standards in science, math, and social studies for appropriate grade levels. Four major concepts will be introduced to students and integrated in all the information and activities presented to the students. These major concepts will be history and progress of research, natural history of primates, chimpanzee behavior and social make up, and conservation issues locally and global.
Program Goals:
* To educate about the natural history of primates
* To educate about the history of research techniques
* To develop awareness of conservation issues locally and global
* To build awareness of Jane Goodall, her research, image, and message
Program Components:
Post- secondary components: Focus will be on regional universities.
Guided Tours: 1 4 hours by professional zoo staff. Universities will be given options to enhance curriculum in the following areas: current research (genetic and reproductive) conducted on zoo grounds, conservation issues being addressed in current research, primate collections, and maintenance of animal collections (technology found in buildings).
Internships: Credit/ non- credit internships are available in primate areas to learn about the natural history of primates and importance of conservation.
Primary School Components (k- 8):
Imax programming: Program package will include: on site instruction for one hour and viewing of the Jane Goodall IMAX. During instruction time the students will be actively involved and introduce to the major concepts of the film. This is to give them the skills to understand the messages being presented in the film. Post trip activities and materials will be given to the teacher for further investigation.
Guided tours: 1- 2 hour guided tours by Docents. These tours will be designed to feature the Zoos primate collection pointing out the natural history of primates, behaviors, and evolution. The tours are designed to be informative and address the importance of conservation.
Outreach: Defined as the Zoo sending staff or volunteers to local schools. The program is designed to inform the students about the importance of conservation at the local and global level. Teaching the major concepts covered in the Jane Goodall IMAX, hands- on activities, and ways they can participate in conservation activities.
Self guided tours: Package of structured activities that can be accomplished at the Zoo. Chaperones and teachers can guide their students through several different activities at their own pace. Follow up activities and information will be included in the package.
Secondary School Components (9- 12):
