Program Audience: Kentucky Teachers K-8
Program Overview:
A day long workshop for educators to learn about primates, with an emphasis on chimpanzees, through observation, lectures, visuals and hands-on activities.
Program Goals:
A. Give teachers information, background and hands-on activities to make the film experience come alive for students.
B. Show teachers how this film and related activities can address state standards.
C. Share research techniques with teachers in order to expose students to research methods.
D. Give teachers ideas for their students to put Jane Goodalls inspiring conservation message to work.
Program Components:
A. Different kinds of primates, noting ones that are available at the Louisville Zoo. Use of slides for illustrations.
B. Look at various methods of primate research focusing on research through observation.
C. Workshop group bused to Louisville Zoo to do primate observation. Primates available for observation: Lemurs, Woolly Monkey, Cotton-tail Tamarin, Orangutan, Lowland Gorillas, Siamang.
Short introduction to their primates by Primate expert at the Zoo.

D. Bused back to the Science Center. General information about chimps. Give out handout information on chimps. Website information www.smm.org/chimps/survey
E. View video clips from the film
F. Look at Janes 40 year study of the chimps. History of study techniques.
G. Research of Tool use by chimps:
Ant and termite fishing - Activity - Experience trying the two methods with models we provide.
Nut cracking by use of a rock and an anvil. Used by the chimps in the Bossou and Tai Forest
H. Characteristics of chimps as found through research: Communications, diet, group behavior, observation skills.
Activity: With use of a mirror compare your emotional face expressions with those of a chimp using chimp emotion expression chart. (We will provide)
I. Dangers facing chimps - disease, poachers, forest stripping, use for laboratory research
J. Janes message for conservation:
Each individual matters
Each individual has a role to play
Each individual can make a difference
K. Teachers as a group to generate list of conservation opportunities for their students.
L. Introduce Roots and Shoots Program.
M. Look at Web site for film with the teachers
Implementation Procedures/Steps needed to facilitate this program:
A. February, 2002, mail brochures and reservation forms to all teachers in the state to announce the workshop.
B. Secure staff needed to teach the workshop
C. Make arrangements with Zoo and primate specialist for visit, observation and lecture at the zoo.
D. First week of June set final curriculum for the workshop and began to gather necessary materials.
E. First week of July, confirmation letter sent to registered teachers with final workshop information.
F. In house arrangements made for rooms to meet in, technical equipment, teacher lunches, bus to transport to the zoo, parking passes, etc.
Programs dates and times:
A. Workshop to be offered one full day, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., the middle of July, 2002, as part of our yearly teacher institute program. It will be located at the Science Center with a morning field trip to the Louisville Zoo.
Materials:
Some of the materials needed: Jane Goodall films video, VCR, computer to view websites, samples of Janes early observations, primate slides, observation sheets for workshop participants to use, model termite nest and ant hill for activity, hand out sheets on general chimp information mirrors for each individual.

Evaluation method:
Written evaluation by teachers at end of the workshop. The number of teachers who bring their students to see the film.
