Program Audience: Classroom teachers

Program Overview: Teachers come to 2 afternoon classes at the zoo and museum.

Program Goals:
A. Give teachers information, background and hands-on activities to make the film experience come alive for students.
B. Show teachers how this film and related activities can address state standards.
C. Give teachers ideas for their students to put Jane Goodalls inspiring conservation message to work.
D. Share research techniques with teachers in order to expose students to research methods.

Program Components:
First meeting at the Rio Grande Zoo
-- Chimp greeting
-- Ice breaker, make chimp masks. There are two or more of each different facial expression. They must find their partners, then introduce each other and describe the expression of their masks.

* Throughout the class, relate each activity to state standards.

-- Compare humans to other apes and specifically chimpanzees similarities and differences. Size of arms and legs, size of hand, amount of weight chimps easily lift, teeth, brain size, etc. Try on non-stereoscopic vision glasses.
-- Do the non-opposable thumb relay.
-- Where in the world do chimps live?
-- Tour of primates at the zoo by education staff
-- Overview of animal observations; introduce observation activity. Different methods will include a behavior bingo card, an outline of ways to observe, and an inquiry-open question approach.
-- Teams spend time observing primates.
-- Special tour with primate keepers, with question and answer session; discuss primate enrichment activities. Student activity, Design a primate enrichment activity--toys, problems to solve, etc.
-- Closure on Zoo visit--discuss observations, and primate exhibit experiences.
Give web resource addresses; handouts for reading before next week.
Misc. student activities: try brachiation on the monkey bars, what goes into making a nest, what do chimps eat?

The following week at the Natural History Museum
-- Welcome and introductions.
-- View the movie, Jane Goodalls Wild Chimpanzees
-- Chimp Tool use. Have tools that teachers will use to fish for termites/poppy seeds;
large nuts and hammer and anvil to try to crack.
-- Chimp Culture. Discuss what culture is, and how we can talk about chimp culture.
-- Jane Goodall the researcher-- Read/tell the story of how she became a researcher, her background, and the long history of her work. Activity for students, Write about yourself in 40 years. If someone were to write about the research accomplishments you will achieve in the next 40 years, what would they write?
-- Overview what we have and are learning about chimpanzees through Jane Goodalls and others research. How has chimp research changed our view of primates?
-- What is the status of chimpanzees today? Talk about chimp conservation issues. Introduce Roots and Shoots and Janes message for conservation:
Every individual matters
Every individual has a role to play
Every individual makes a difference
-- Website walk through--on projection video.

Program dates and times:
Two Wednesday afternoons, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. One week at the Zoo, the other at the Museum

Materials:

Non-stereoscopic vision glasses--make!
Make termite colony simulation-- plastic tubes in different shapes (all hidden under a cloth) with different tools to try to get food.
Hammer and anvil, extra small rocks to stick under to balance the anvil. Need a wobbly anvil.
